Pest ladybug control

Almost everyone from his childhood knows that ladybugs (lady beetles) are beneficial because they feed on harmful insects such as aphids, which damage plants in gardens and landscapes. Nevertheless, some species of those helpful insects can become a nuisance because of some aspects of their biology.

There are more than 450 known species of lady beetles in North America with several exotic species purposely released as biological control agents. The Asian ladybeetle (Harmonia axyridis) is one of those and is known best. It has many color forms and lives up to three years, overwintering in different natural crevices or man made structures. Although this ladybug species is beneficial during the summer and the fall in fields and gardens, it often becomes a severe household pest during late fall and winter, because they congregate in large numbers on the sides of homes and other buildings, eventually getting into the buildings through small cracks or crevices, or natural breaks in the window panes, door jams or foundations as the temperatures decrease.

Once ladybugs have become established in the home, there aren't a lot of treatment options neither chemical nor physical. The easiest way to remove ladybugs, once they are indoors, is with a vacuum cleaner. Other products available on the market are - Asian Ladybug Traps, Black Vengeance Lady Beetle Traps, BioCare Asian Ladybug Traps, Ladybug Window Traps, Ladybug light traps etc. Sealing exterior gaps and cracks around windows, doors, roofs, siding and other points of access before the beetles appear can prevent unwanted entry. Spraying pyrethroid insecticides such as permethrin, esfenvalerate or natural insecticide boric acid to the outside of buildings when the beetles appear may help prevent pest entry. Camphor and Menthol are known to repel ladybugs, so misting those areas where lady bugs are thought to be overwintering may also drive them out.
